O-Ring Structure » How to describe an O-Ring

Table: O-Ring Geometry:

Custom Orings and Metric Orings are typically described by their Internal Diameter (ID), Radial Cross Section (CS), Rubber Material from which they are constructed plus the material Hardness on a Shore A scale or Datwyler Compound Number.
For AS568A Size O-rings, parts are described as the AS568 size with a suffix of the Rubber Material from which they are constructed plus the material Hardness on a Shore A scale or the Datwyler Compound Number. For examples of how to indicate an o-ring size, please visit the as568 oring page or the metric oring page.
O-ring Application Background

O-ring Application » Functional Description

An o-ring is a simple and versatile ring-shaped packing or sealing device with a circular cross section, from which the "O" in its name is derived. O-rings function as compact and reliable sealing devices by absorbing the tolerance stack-up between closely mated surfaces in both dynamic (moving) static (stationary) applications.
An oring seals by blocking any potential leak path of a fluid (liquid or gas) between two closely spaced surfaces. The oring is generally installed in a machined groove in one of the surfaces to be sealed. As the two surfaces are brought together, forming a gland, they squeeze the cross section on the oring.
Datwyler engineers are available to assist you in selecting the right oring for your application, including material, size, and mating gland design and associate seal squeeze. Please contact us today to discuss your application.
